Have You Been Asked for a PPN 06/21 Carbon Reduction Plan?
We’ll help you understand what’s required.
Most of the businesses and organisations we work with don’t have a dedicated sustainability specialist. They're businesses trying to win work and need some help understanding what's being asked of them. That's where we come in. We'll explain the requirements, guide you through the process and help you prepare a PPN 06/21 Carbon Reduction Plan that supports your tender submission.
What is a PPN 06/21 Carbon Reduction Plan?
Due to the UK Governments commitment to reaching Net Zero by 2050, Procurement Policy Note (PPN) 06/21 was introduced, to ensure anyone bidding for a large Government contract had considered their business’s carbon emissions and had plans in place to reduce them. This plan covers Scope 1 and 2, and a partial Scope 3 assessment, which includes relevant emissions to your business from the following 5 categories:
- Upstream Transportation and Distribution
- Waste generated
- Business Travel
- Employee Commuting
- Downstream Transportation and Distribution
Once completed, the PPN 06/21 needs to be publicly accessible on the company’s website and up issued each year to track the reductions over time.
Do You Actually Need a PPN 06/21 Carbon Reduction Plan?
This depends on the contract you are bidding for. Many public sector tenders now ask suppliers to demonstrate how they’re measuring and reducing their carbon emissions. If a PPN 06/21 is required for your tender, this will be stated as part of the tender requirement. It is worth noting that policies change over time, so a PPN 06/21 may be a future requirement for when re-tendering.
If you’re unsure whether the requirement applies to you, we’ll help you work it out before you spend time gathering information.
Never Done a PPN 06/21 Before?
Don’t worry! Most businesses we speak to are dealing with this for the first time. These businesses don’t have a dedicated sustainability team, haven’t measured their emissions before, and they certainly weren’t expecting to become experts in carbon reporting just to submit a tender.
The good news is you don’t have to! Our role is to help you understand what’s required and guide you through the process step by step, with no confusing terminology – Just straightforward advice and practical support.
